Can you believe that there is actually a correct way to drink water?

The tips set out below will ensure that you reap all the benefits of the water you are consuming, while maximising its healing properties.

I’m sure we have all heard that we need to consume between 2-3 litres of water a day or the 8 glasses a day rule. (Remember that each person’s need can vary depending on factors such as gender, how active you are and where you live.) But 8 glasses a day is generally a very achievable goal for most people to go by.

The time that you drink water as well as the type of water you consume, can maximise its health benefits.

TIMING

When is the best time to drink water?

General tip: never wait until you feel thirsty before you drink water, make sure you hydrate yourself consistently so as not to get to that point.

After waking

activates internal organs

After exercise

brings heart rate back down to normal

½ hour before a meal

aids digestion

Before a bath

lowers your blood pressure

Before bed

replenish any fluid loss

When you are feeling sick

ensures proper hydration for function

When you are feeling tired

helps you to recharge

When you are surrounded by sick people

stops infection from settling in the body

TYPE

Is there a type of water that is better for you?

Natural spring water is one of the best sources of water you can provide your body with, it is fluoride-free, full of vital nutrients and has an alkaline PH which has many benefits for the body (see my post about alkaline foods and reducing your body’s PH levels here. )

TEMPERATURE

Does cold vs hot water matter?

The temperature of the water is another factor that one should consider, warm water is more beneficial for your body than cold water, according to some. This theory is based on the fact that cold water causes your stomach to contract, reducing your digestion after eating. Drinking warm water can help with digestion, aid circulation as well as help the body to eliminate toxins a lot faster.

Conclusion:

Try and maintain the goal of consuming 8 glasses of water a day, our body is made up of 60% water and requires proper hydration for general function. The time at which you drink water can enhance its benefits, such as after waking up and before a meal. And lastly, warm water is preferred over cold water in order to aid circulation and digestion, natural spring water is also chosen over tap water based on its nutrient composition and PH level.
